This is a family favorite and we make at least once a week. It is a variation to a fried chicken recipe we found in the PETA Go Vegetarian Go Vegan! starter kit. The original version called for baking powder and flour, but I found that made the batter on the strips burn so I eliminated the baking powder and replaced the flour with panko bread crumbs. There are many variations to this recipe. You can try any type of sauce to replace the mustard as well as vary the seasonings based on your taste. We’ve tried several variations, but really like this combination.
Ingredients:
- 2 bags of Morningstar Farms Chik’n Strips
- 3 T. mustard
- 1/2 cup water
- 6 oz. Panko bread crumbs
- 4 T. nutritional yeast
- Seasonings: salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, poultry seasoning, thyme, rosemary. You can use any combination of seasonings you like.
- Cooking oil: soybean, vegetable or canola
Mix mustard and water together in a medium bowl. Set aside. Mix bread crumbs and seasonings together in a large bowl or ziploc bag. Add 1/2 cup of bread crumb mixture to mustard mixture. Mix Chik’n Strips in mustard mixture. Place strips in the seasoned bread crumbs and toss. Pour one inch oil in pan to fry strips. Turn as needed. It only takes a few minutes to cook, so stay close to the pan. Place on paper towl to drain and cool.
Morningstar Farms Chik’n Strips can be found is most major grocery stores, like Giant, Whole Foods, Target, Wegmans, and My Organic Market.
